  1.  Odisha recorded 719 persons, including 125 children below 18 years of age, tested positive for COVID-19 during the last 24 hours while a total of 64656 samples were tested in the state, yesterday. The Test Positivity Rate (TPR) for the day stood at 1.11%. Khurda district reported highest 259 new infections, followed by Cuttack (89) and Balasore (43).

  2. India recorded 30,941 cases of coronavirus in 24 hours Tuesday, 27.9% lower than Monday, government data showed. The active cases account for 1.13% of the overall cases (3,27,68,880).

  3. The Monsoon session of the Odisha Assembly, beginning today, is likely to witness uproar as both opposition BJP and Congress have lined up several issues to attack the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government.

  4.  The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) will start commercial operations of its second unit of Darlipali Super Thermal Power Station in Odisha’s Sundargarh district from September 1, officials said on Tuesday. The first unit of the plant was commissioned on March 1, 2020.

  5. Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Jena said that in view of the drop in daily cases of Covid-19 infections, the State government has decided to relax restrictions to support the livelihood of people. As per the decision, the weekend shutdown which was enforced in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Puri has been lifted.

  6. The United States announced the end of its 20-year-old war in Afghanistan before the deadline of August 31, 2021.  The 9/11 terrorist strike had forced the US to enter Afghanistan and overthrow the Taliban rule who had provided safe havens to the Al Qaeda leadership.

  8. Ambassador of India to Qatar Deepak Mittal met Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, the Head of Taliban’s Political Office in Doha. The meeting took place at the Embassy of India in Doha on the request of the Taliban side on 31 Aug.

  9. The Indian and Algerian navies conducted their first ever naval exercise off the coast of Algeria on August 29, 2021. Stealth ship INS Tabar represented India while Algeria was represented by its naval ship ANS Ezager. The exercise reflects increased maritime cooperation among two countries.

  10. The United Nations Security Council, under the Presidency of India, adopted a resolution on the situation in Afghanistan on August 30, 2021. The resolution demanded that the war-torn country, Afghanistan, not be used to threaten or attack any nation or shelter terrorists. 

  11. Nine new judges, including three women, were on Tuesday administered oath of office as judges of the Supreme Court, taking its strength to 33. It is for the first time in the history of the apex court that nine judges took oath of office at one go. Chief Justice of India N V Ramana administered the oath of office to the new judges in a swearing-in ceremony held in the auditorium of the Supreme Court's additional building complex.

  12. IIT Madras is in process of developing an online platform called e-Source that will be used to tackle electronic wastes (e-waste). E-Source will be used to tackle e-waste by linking stakeholders of the formal and informal economy.

  13. Indian economy has clocked a record double-digit growth in the June quarter. India’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew 20.1% in the first quarter of FY22. However, it must be noted that this record growth was in comparison against the April-June quarter of 2020 when the economy contracted 24.4%.

  14. The civil aviation hub at Jewar, which includes the upcoming Noida International Airport Ltd (NIAL) on 5,000 hectares along Yamuna Expressway, is set to get bigger as the Yamuna expressway industrial development authority (Yeida) has decided to add another 1,000 hectares to the project by merging three proposed industrial sectors with the airport plan.

  15. In a major boost to 'Make in India' in the defence sector, the Indian Army has sent proposals worth around Rs 14,000 crore to acquire two regiments of the Akash-S air defence missile system and 25 Advanced Light Helicopters (ALHs). The proposal is with the Defence Ministry and a decision on the approval is expected soon at a high-level meeting to be chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

  20. In the national capital,petrol prices have been cut by 15 paise to ₹ 101.34 and diesel was reduced by 15 paise to ₹ 88.77 per litre, according to Indian Oil Corporation.
