World Oceans Day

The United Nations and international law observe June 8 as World Oceans Day.

The ocean covers approximately 71 per cent of the earth’s surface. This largest saltwater body has enormous life in it, including plants, animals, and other organisms.

The objective of World Oceans Day is to create awareness in human lives of the benefits it has enjoyed from the ocean. As the ocean provides a variety of life-saving medicinal compounds, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer drugs. So, now it’s our turn to conserve the sea and marine resources for sustainable development.

The theme of World Oceans Day 2021:

This year's prime focus will be on the life and livelihood that the ocean sustains. The theme for World Oceans Day 2021 is “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods”.

History of World Oceans Day 2021:

Canada first proposed the concept for World Oceans Day in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Then, in 2004, the Ocean Project and World Ocean Network launched a four-year petition to the United Nations to officially recognise 8 June as World Oceans Day. Fours years later, in December 2008, a United Nations resolution designated the day for the oceans.


World Brain Tumour Day

World Brain Tumour Day is observed annually on 8 June. The day is marked to raise awareness and educate people about brain tumours. Among the many deadly health issues and diseases, brain tumour is the tenth leading cause of morbidity in India.

What is a brain tumour?

It is an unnecessary growth of abnormal cells in the brain. A brain tumour occurs in the body when abnormal cells are produced within any part of the brain.

Signs and symptoms of brain tumour: But the major symptoms of brain tumour include:

- Headaches (all headaches are not due to tumours. Also, severe headaches that are not relieved by common medicines should be taken into note)

- A change in mental functioning

- Blurred vision or double vision

- Vomiting caused by headache

- Difficulty in physical movements like walking, speaking, as well as sensation and balancing

- Unexplained confusion even in normal things

- Hormonal imbalance or change

- Sexual dysfunction

- Drastic behavioural changes

Doctors suggest the following treatments for patients according to their type, grade, and position of tumour:- Surgery,- Radiotherapy,- Chemotherapy,- Steroids,- Anti-seizure medication,- Ventricular peritoneal shunt. Despite the treatment, strong emotional support of family members and friends is also required for patients who suffer from the same illness. Therefore, such patients need support in maintaining a positive attitude for healing.
