The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

 

The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed on 26 June every year with the aim to create awareness about issues related to drugs and strengthening action and cooperation in order to make the world free of drug abuse.

By resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.

Every year, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) prepares the World Drug Report which contains factual data and statistics to address the current drug problem.

Theme of 2021 World Day Against Drug Abuse: Share Facts On Drugs, Save Lives. The theme promotes combating misinformation and sharing drugs-related facts as well as solutions for treatment to fight against the problem all over the world.

 World Drug Report 2021: Share facts, raise awareness

Around 275 million people used drugs globally in the last year. Over 36 million people suffered from drug use disorders:  2021 ,World Drug Report UNODC.

Rise in the use of cannabis during the pandemic has been reported by most countries. 

Non-medical use of pharmaceutical drugs has also been observed in the same period.

The latest global estimates say, about 5.5 per cent of the population between 15 and 64 years have used drugs at least once in the past year.

36.3 million people (13 per cent of the total number of persons who use drugs) suffer from disoders linked to drug abuse.

Over 11 million people globally are estimated to inject drugs - half of them have Hepatitis C. 

Opioids continue to account for the largest burden of disease-linked to drug abuse.

Drug markets have quickly resumed operations after the initial disruption when the COVID-19 pandemic started.

There is a rise in larger shipments of illicit drugs and frequency of overland routes used for trafficking

Private planes are being increasingly used for drug trafficking, and even contactless methods have risen to deliver drugs.


 International day in support of victims of torture

 The International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is observed on 26 June every year by the United Nations (UN). The day is marked to urge all to unite for those who have faced or are facing abuse and torture. The consequences of torture are that it can transform into a cycle of violence and affect generations to come. This day is also to honour and support victims and survivors throughout the world.

According to Human Rights Court, torture is a ‘deliberate inhuman treatment causing very serious and cruel suffering’. UN strictly condemned such acts and consider them as a crime against humanity. The main motto of this day is to prevent all citizens from torture.

History

On June 26, 1987, the Convention against Torture came into force. In 1997 the United Nations General Assembly decided to mark this historic date and designated June 26 each year as the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. The first International Day in Support of Victims of Torture was held on June 26, 1998. It was a day when the United Nations appealed to all governments and members of civil society to take action to defeat torture and torturers everywhere. This convention has now been ratified by 162 countries. . According to the UN website, the aim was the total eradication of torture.

Significance

It is important to mark this day because it unites people in support of those who have been victims of physical and mental torture. Under international laws, torture is a crime.

 Through this occasion, the UN aims to eradicate torture, an act that denies dignity to the victims. With this day, the UN wants to end the degrading inhuman treatment that victims of torture face.
