National Maritime Day

National Maritime Day in India is observed on 5 April every year. This year is the 59th edition.  The Day is celebrated every year to illustrate the awareness in supporting intercontinental commerce.  The global economy should be  well-organized, safe and sound.  Environmentally responsive approach of transporting goods from one corner to another corner of the world. The first anniversary of the day was held in 1964 in order to raise awareness about international trade and the economy. The day is commemorated to support the global economy and express gratitude towards the Indian navy.

The theme of the National Maritime Day is “Sustainable Shipping beyond Covid-19’’.

History of National Maritime Day 2022

A ship called SS Loyalty had travelled from Mumbai to London on April 5, 1919 - when India was still under the British rule. The ship marked the beginning of Indian commercial shipping. After gaining independence, India joined the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 1959. National Maritime Day was first celebrated on April 5, 1964. The saga of Indian shipping first started on April 5, 1919, when the SS Loyalty, the first ship of The Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd travelled from Mumbai to the United Kingdom (London).
