1955: Kanchanganga, the third highest peak in the world, was first climbed by British mountaineers Joe Brown and George Band.

1961: US President John F. Kennedy announced at the joint session of the US Congress that the Apollo Program will be launched before the end of this decade.

1963: Organization of African Unity (OAU) established in Adisababa, Ethiopia.

1977: The Chinese government lifted the ban on William Shakespeare’s literature. The ban lasted for about 10 years.

1981: Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) was established in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The member states are Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

1985: A cyclone killed at least 10,000 people in Bangladesh.

1992: Famous Bengali writer Subhash Mukhopadhyay awarded the Jnanpith Award.

1995: American scientists succeeded in decoding the DNA of a living organism for the first time.

2011: the famous American show Oprah Winfrey said goodbye to this day after completing 25 years. The hit show was named after the program’s anchor, Oprah Winfrey.

2012: SpaceX Dragon became the first commercial spacecraft to successfully integrate with the International Space Station.
