1522 – A battered Spanish ship with only 15 crewmen left alive reached Seville today after sailing around the world. The Victoria, by Sebastian Del Cano, was the only survivor of the fleet of five ships that set sail three years ago seeking a westward passage to the Indies. Ferdinand Magellan was the commander of the ship.

1879 – The first British telephone exchange opened in Lombard Street, London.

1936 – British aviator Beryl Markham flew solo across the Atlantic.

1941 – Yellow Star of David badges were compulsory for all Jewish citizens in Nazi Germany.

1965 – India Pakistan war began.

1966 – Prime Minister Dr. Hendrik Verwoerd, the architect of apartheid, is stabbed to death in Cape Town, South Africa during a parliamentary meeting.

1968 – The kingdom of Swaziland in South Africa gained its independence.

1985 – All employees of ATV Publishing throughout the world were made redundant following a takeover by Michael Jackson and CBS Songs.

1988 – 11-year-old Thomas Gregory from London became the youngest person to swim across English Chanel.

1989 – A computer error in Paris resulted in 41,000 residents, who should have received traffic fines, receiving letters charging them with murder, extortion, and organized prostitution.

1757 – Marquis de Lafayette, French statesman, and soldier. He fought with the American colonists for independence and was a major figure in the French revolution.

1766 – John Dalton, English chemist, and physicist. He is best known for introducing the atomic theory into chemistry, and for his research into color blindness.

1888 – Joseph Kennedy, American founder of the dynasty that gave rise to the first catholic American President.

1889 – Sarat Chandra Bose, Indian Independence activist, and lawyer. He was an elder brother of Subhash Chandra Bose.

1901 – Kamalabai Kamat (Kamalabai Raghunath Gokhale), the first female actor in the Indian film industry.

1921 – Norman Joseph Woodland, American inventor, best known as one of the inventors of the barcode, for which he received a patent in October 1952.

1929 – Yash Johar, Indian film director, and producer.

1949 – Rakesh Roshan, Indian actor, director, and producer.

1972 – Idris Elba, English actor, DJ, and recording artist.

1986 – Harrdy Sandhu, Indian singer, and actor.

1566 – Suleiman the Magnificent, the Ottoman sultan for 46 years, caliph of the Arabs, and ruler of Islam.

1862 – Gustaf Erik Pasch, Swedish inventor, and professor of chemistry at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and inventor of the safety match.

1885 – Narcis Monturiol, Spanish artist and engineer. He was the inventor of the first air-independent and combustion-engine-driven submarine.

1963 – M. Govinda Pai, a Kannada poet. 

1972 – Allauddin Khan, Bengali Indian sarod player, and multi-instrumentalist.

1978 – Adolf Dassler, German entrepreneur best remembered as the founder of the sportswear company Adidas.

1986 – Suresh Hariprasad Joshi, an Indian novelist, short-story writer, literary critic, poet, translator, editor and academic 

2012 – Lawrie Dring, Scottish scout leader, founded the World Federation of Independent Scouts.

2017 – Lotfi A. Zadeh, American mathematician, computer scientist, electrical engineer, artificial intelligence researcher. He introduced the concept of so-called “fuzzy” mathematics.

2019 – Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwean revolutionary, and politician who served as Prime Minister of Zimbabwe from 1980 to 1987 and then as President from 1987 to 2017.
