1812  – Marching to Moscow, Napoleon’s forces defeated the Russians at the battle of Borodino, 70 miles (112km) west of the city.

1822  – Brazil declared its independence from Portugal.

1906  – The first Indian bank, the Bank of India, was founded in Mumbai.

1923   – The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) was established.

1931  – Second Round Table Conference started in London.

1978  – The first genetically engineered, synthetic “human” insulin was produced using E. coli bacteria to produce insulin.

2005  – Egypt holds its first-ever multi-party presidential election.

1920 – Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay, an Indian writer of modern Bengali literature.

1925 – Bhanumati Ramakrishnan, Indian actress. Widely known as the first female superstar of Telugu cinema and South Indian film industry, she is also known for her works in Tamil cinema.

1933 – Ela Bhatt, an Indian cooperative organizer, activist, and Gandhian. She founded the Self-Employed Women’s Association of India (SEWA) in 1972. Won Ramon Magsaysay.

1951 – Mammootty, Indian film actor. He works in Malayalam Films.

1977 – Sachin Pilot, Indian politician. He served as Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan.

1983 – Jwala Gutta, Indian badminton player. She has a total of 316 match wins, the most by any Indian player.

1985 – Radhika Apte, Indian theatre and film actress.

1997 – Mukul Anand, Indian film director, and producer.

2020 – Govind Swarup, an Indian radio astronomer.
