1894 – London Taxi driver George Smith was the first person to be convicted for drunken driving.

1898 – Empress Elisabeth of Austria was assassinated by Luigi Lucheni.

1936 – First World Individual Motorcycle Speedway Championship, Held at London’s (England) Wembley Stadium. 

1960 – At the Summer Olympics in Rome, Abebe Bikila becomes the first sub-Saharan African to win a gold medal, winning the marathon in bare feet.

1967 – The people of Gibraltar vote to remain a British dependency rather than becoming part of Spain.

1988 – Steffi Graf, the 19-year-old West German tennis star, was today the third woman in history to win the Grand Slam – the Australian, French, Wimbledon, and U. S. Open singles titles in the same year.

2002 – Switzerland, traditionally a neutral country, became a full member of the United Nations.

1892 – Arthur Compton, American physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1927 for his 1923 discovery of the Compton effect, which demonstrated the particle nature of electromagnetic radiation.

1842 – William Hobson, Irish-New Zealand soldier, and politician, 1st Governor of New Zealand. 

1915 – Bagha Jatin, Indian freedom fighter, philosopher, and author.

1923 – Sukumar Ray, Indian poet, and playwright. He was famous for his writings for children. He is the father of Satyajit Ray.

1983 – Balthazar Johannes Vorster, former prime Minister of South Africa who was interned during World War II as a pro-Nazi leader.

2000 – Zaib-un-Nissa Hamidullah, Indian-Pakistani journalist and author. She was a pioneer of Pakistani literature and journalism in English, and also a pioneer of feminism in Pakistan. She was Pakistan’s first female columnist, editor, publisher, and political commentator.
