1910– The World’s first policewoman was appointed by the Los Angeles Police Department: Mrs. Alice Stebbin Wells was a social worker in her previous carrier.

1935– American millionaire Howard Hughes achieved an aviation record, flying an airplane of his design at 352.46 mph (564 kph).

1936– British Tennis champion Fred Perry won the US Tennis championships to become the first non-American winner.

1953– Nikita Khrushchev was elected the first secretary of the Soviet Communist Party.

1857– The SS Central America sunk about 160 miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, drowning a total of 426 passengers and crew, including Captain William Lewis Herndon. The ship was carrying 13-15 tons of gold from the California Gold Rush.

1919– Adolf Hitler became a candidate for the German Workers Party.

1948– Marshal Lin Biao, commander-in-chief of the Chinese communist Northeast Field Army, launched a massive offensive toward Jinzhou, Liaoshen Campaign has begun.

1959–The Soviet Union launched a large rocket, Lunik II, at the Moon.

2002– Metsat, an Indian satellite was successfully launched.

2005– Disney land started in Hong Kong.

1994 – Boris Yegorov, Soviet Astronaut, The first Soviet physician to be sent into outer space.

2003 – Johnny Cash, Johnny Cash was a famous American singer-songwriter, author and actor.

2009 – Norman Borlaug, American agronomist, and humanitarian, Noble Prize laureate. Known as the Father of the Green Revolution.
