Historical Events - September 14

1803 – British General Lake captured Delhi in India. 

1901 – Theodore Roosevelt became the 26th and youngest president of the US at the age of 43.

1917 – Russia declared its empire Russian Republic.

1948 – Indian Army captured the city of Daulatabad as part of Operation Polo. 

1949 – Hindi language was declared as the national language of India and celebrated as Hindi Day. But, South Indian states don’t consider the Hindi language as National Language.

1959 – Man reached out and made contact with the Moon for the first time. Lunik II, a Soviet spacecraft, crash-landed on the moon after a two days journey. It sent back a stream of scientific data during the trip.

1960 – The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) was created by Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela.

1975 – Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton, canonized by Pope Paul VI, became the first American saint.

1997– Ahmedabad-Howrah express plunged into a river in Bilaspur, Madhya Pradesh, which caused 81 deaths of people. 

2000– Microsoft had released Windows ME.

2015  – The first observation of Gravitational waves was made, announced by the LIGO and VIRGO collaborations on 11 February 2016.

1769 – Boron von Humboldt, a German scientist who explored Central and South America and published data that forms the foundation of the study of ecology, which he initiated.

1774 – Lord William Bentinck, He was a British soldier and statesman. He served as Governor-General of India from 1828 to 1835. He has been credited for significant social and educational reforms in India including abolishing Sati, suppressing female infanticide, and human sacrifice. 

1879 – Margaret Higgins Sanger, an American birth control activist, sex educator, writer, and nurse.

1887 – Charles Dana Gibson, an American artist who created the Gibson Girl, an idealist picture of a woman which set a new style of American femininity.

1923 – Ram Jethmalani, an Indian lawyer, and politician.

1968 – Tanya Arvind Dubash, Indian businesswoman. She is an executive director and chief brand officer at the Godrej Group.

1975 – Rahul Sharma, an Indian businessman, founder of Revolt MotorsYU Televentures, and the co-founder of Micromax Informatics. He married to actress Asin Thottumukal.

1984 – Ayushmann Khurrana, Indian actor and singer.

 

Death Anniversaries – September 14

1712 – Giovanni Domenico Cassini, Italian Mathematician, astronomer, and engineer. Cassini discovered four satellites of the planet Saturn and noted the division of the rings of Saturn; the Cassini Division was named after him. Giovanni Domenico Cassini was also the first of his family to begin work on the project of creating a topographic map of France.

1836 – Aaron Burr, an American politician, and lawyer. A Founding Father, he served as the third vice president of the United States during President Thomas Jefferson’s first term 

1901 -William McKinley, an American politician. He was the 25th President of the United States, the last one to have served in the American Civil War.

1998 – Yang Shangkun, 4th president of the People’s Republic of China.

2005 – Robert Wise, American Oscan winning film director.

2011 – Harishchandra Madhavrao Birajdar, a wrestler and wrestling coach from India. He was a Gold Medallist in the 1970 British Commonwealth Games. He was also known as the coach of National Games winners.

2015 – Fred DeLuca, American businessman, co-founded Subway.
