1630– The city of Boston, Massachusetts is founded.

1787– The United States composed a new constitution. George Washington, leader of the Philadelphia Convention, was today presented with a new Constitution for the United States of America. 

1792– George Washington gave his farewell address as President of the USA.

1948– The Nizam of Hyderabad surrendered his sovereignty over the Hyderabad State and joins the Indian Union. 

1983– Vanessa Williams became the first black Miss America.

1991– The first version of the Linux kernel (0.01) was released to the Internet.

2001– The New York Stock Exchange reopens for trading after the September 11 attacks, the longest closure since the Great Depression.

1879 – Periyar E. V. Ramasamy, Indian politician, and social reformer.

1885 – Prabodhankar Thakre, Indian writer. He is a father of Bal Saheb Thakre.

1901 – Sir Francis Chichester, English yachtsman and aviator who was knighted for sailing around the world solo in Gypsy Moth IV and flew his plane Gypsy Moth solo east to west across the Tasman Sea.

1914 – Thomas J. Bata, Czech businessman. Known as ‘Shoemaker of the World’.
