2003– NASA’s Galileo spacecraft entered Jupiter’s atmosphere and died.

1922 – Chen Ning Yang, the Nobel Prize-winning Chinese physicist.

1688 – François Bernier, French physician, and traveler. He was briefly personal physician to Mughal prince Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan.

1828 – Shaka, Zulu Emperor.

1952 – Carlo Juho Stahlberg, Finland’s first president.

1956 – Frederick Soddy, Nobel Prize-winning English chemist. He explained, with Ernest Rutherford, that radioactivity is due to the transmutation of elements, now known to involve nuclear reactions. He also proved the existence of isotopes of certain radioactive elements.

1970 – Shardendu Bandopadhyay, Indian-Bengali writer.

2011 – Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Indian cricket captain and last Nawab of Pataudi Sansthan.
