1775: Maharaja Nand Kumar was hanged in Calcutta for forgery. He was the first Indian to be executed by hanging.

1888 : Karl Benz, the inventor of the car, patented his first car in 1886. But the credit for driving this car alone for long distances goes to his wife. She went to the city 104 km away from this car on this day.

1962 : Nelson Mandela was jailed. 

1962 : American actress Marilyn Monroe was found dead at her home from a drug overdose.

1965 : The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 began as Pakistani soldiers cross the Line of Control dressed as locals.

1991 : Justice Leila Seth became the first woman Chief Justice of the High Court in India.

2019 : Revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir (state) occurred and the state was bifurcated into two union territories viz Jammu and Kashmir (union territory) and Ladakh.
