1741: King Marthanda Verma of Travancore defeated the Dutch East India Company at the Battle of Colachel.

1821: Missouri became the 24th state of the United States.

1846: The Smithsonian Institution for scientific research was established in Washington with a bequest from English scientist James Smithson.

1889: The screw bottle top is patented at the Hope Glass Works near Barnsley, Yorkshire England.

1915 Henry Moseley.  English physicist who developed Moseley’s Law in the field of x-ray spectroscopy

1945 Dr. Robert Hutchings Goddard, an American engineer, professor, physicist, and inventor who is considered the father of modern rocket propulsion.

1960 Oswald Veblen. . Influential mathematician who proved the Jordan Curve Theorem in 1905. He also contributed to the foundation of modern geometry and atomic physics.

1980 Yahya khan, the 3rd  President of Pakistan.

1982 M. K. Vainu Bappu was an Indian astronomer and president of the International Astronomical Union.

1986 Arunkumar Shridhar Vaidya, 13th chief of Army Staff of Indian Army. Decorated twice by Mahavir Chakra– the nation’s second-highest gallantry award.  He was assassinated by militants.

1992 Lieutenant General S.P.P. Thorat was a General officer in the Indian Army. He was commanding in chief in the 1962 Sino Indian war.
