Historical Events - August 14

1893   :  France became the first country to introduce Motor Vehicle Registration.

1945   : Japan surrendered in World War II.

1947   : Pakistan was given independence from the British Raj, formally ending the rule of the  British India Company.

1947   : Harilal Jekisundas Kania Appointed as the Chief Justice of India, succeeding Patrick Spence. And Lord Mountbatten became the first Governor-General of India.

1962   : Bombay high court and Calcutta high court were established in India.

1973   : The Pakistan constitution of 1973 came into effect.

1980   : Centre nationalized Maruti company.

1986   : Benazir Bhutto was jailed by Pakistani dictator Zia.

1987   :  Bharat Ratna which is the highest civilian award in India, was conferred to Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan.He was the first non Indian to receive the award.

2006   : Pluto officially lost its status as Planet.

1957   : Johnny Lever, Indian film actor. He is the most noted comedian in Hindi cinema.

1962   : Rameez Raza, Pakistani cricketer and sportcaster.

1966    : Halley Berry, American actress. She was the first African American female to win the best actess Oscar for her role in Monster’s Ball.
