 1817 : Bank of Montreal, Canada’s oldest chartered bank, opened.

1838 : The Times of India first published in Mumbai as The Bombay Times and General of Commerce.

1903 : Panama became independent from Colombia.

1911 : Chevrolet Automobile Company was started.

1913 : Income tax introduced in the United States.

1918 : Poland became independent from Russia.

1944 : Akhil Bharatiya Sangeet Parishad started in Pune by Bharatiya Sangeet Pracharak Mandal.

1957 : A dog named Laika became the first living creature to travel through Russia’s Sputnik-2 spacecraft. But she died within hours of the launch.
