1434 : River Thames was completely frozen.

1859 : The publication of Charles Darwin’s ‘On the Origin of Species.’

1871 : National Rifle Association (NYC) formed.

1944 : In World War II, the 73rd Bombardment Wing launched the first attack on Tokyo from the Northern Mariana Islands. 

1963 : Lee Harvey Oswald, the assassin of John F. Kennedy, was assassinated by Jack Ruby at the Dallas Police Station.

1969 : Apollo 12 landed on the moon.

1971 : During a severe thunderstorm over Washington State, a hijacker calling himself Dan Cooper (aka D. B. Cooper) parachuted from a Northwest Orient Airlines plane with $200,000 in ransom money. He has never been found.

1976 : A devastating earthquake shook eastern Turkey. 4 to 5 thousand people died in it.
