Historical Events - September 15

1588– Final humiliation of the Spanish Armada, whose remnants return to Spanish harbors after defeat by the English.

1821 – San Salvador declared its independence.

1832 – William Huskisson, British MP and former cabinet minister, today became the first person to be killed by the train.

1835– HMS Beagle, with Charles Darwin aboard, reaches the Galapagos Island. The ship lands at Chatham or San Cristobal, the easternmost of the archipelago.

1916– Tanks were used for the first time in World War I.

1928– The first Robot to be made in Britain was demonstrated at the Model Engineering Exhibition in London by inventors Captain Richards and A.H. Rendell.

1935– Germany’s persecuted Jews had lost virtually all their rights. At a huge Nazi rally in Nuremberg today, the German dictator, Adolf Hitler, announced new decrees which relegate Jews to Untermensch (sub-human) status.

1966– Britain’s first nuclear submarine, HMS resolution, was launched by the Queen Mother. 

1968– The Soviet Zond 5 spaceship was launched, became the first spacecraft to fly around the Moon and re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere.

2008– Lehman Brothers files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the largest bankruptcy filing in U.S. history.

1860 – M. Vishwesvaraya, Indian engineer, scholar, statesman, and the Diwan of Mysore. India celebrates Engineer’s day every year on his birth anniversary.

1876 – Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, Indian Bengali writer.

1890 – Agatha Christie, English crime writer and one of the most successful novelists of all time, creator of Belgian detective Hercule Poirot and spinster sleuth Miss Jane Marple.

1904 – Umberto II, Last king of Italy.

1909 – C.N. Annadurai, Indian politician, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu state.

1939 – Subramanian Swami, Indian Politician.

1967 – Ramya Krishnan, Indian actress.

1984 – Prince Henry of Wales, commonly known as Harry, second son of Charles and Diana, Prince and Princess of Wales.

1986 – Joshna Chinappa, an Indian professional Squash player. She reached a career-high world ranking of World No. 10 in July 2016. She was the first Indian to win the British Junior Squash Championship title in 2005 in the under-19 category and was also the youngest Indian women’s national champion. She is the current record-holder of most national championship wins, with 18 titles.

1859 – Isambard Kingdom Brunel, an English civil engineer. He is considered “one of the most ingenious and prolific figures in engineering history”.

1868 – John Hanning Speke, He was an English explorer who became the first European to reach Lake Victoria in east Africa.

1883 – Joseph Plateau, a Belgian physicist, and mathematician. He was one of the first people to demonstrate the illusion of a moving image.

1964 – Alfred Blalock, he was an American surgeon famous for his work on shock and blue baby syndrome.

1967 – Dr. Burgula Ramakrishna Rao, the first elected Chief Minister of the erstwhile Hyderabad State. 

1989 – Robert Penn Warren, an American poet, novelist, and literary critic and was one of the founders of New Criticism.

2007 – Colin Steele McRae, He was a British rally driver from Lanark, Scotland. He became the first Scottish person and the youngest to win the World Rally Championship Drivers’ title, a record he still holds.

1803 – British General Lake captured Delhi in India. 

1901 – Theodore Roosevelt became the 26th and youngest president of the US at the age of 43.

1917 – Russia declared its empire Russian Republic.

1948 – Indian Army captured the city of Daulatabad as part of Operation Polo. 

1949 – Hindi language was declared as the national language of India and celebrated as Hindi Day. But, South Indian states don’t consider the Hindi language as National Language.

1959 – Man reached out and made contact with the Moon for the first time. Lunik II, a Soviet spacecraft, crash-landed on the moon after a two days journey. It sent back a stream of scientific data during the trip.

1960 – The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) was created by Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela.

1975 – Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton, canonized by Pope Paul VI, became the first American saint.

1997– Ahmedabad-Howrah express plunged into a river in Bilaspur, Madhya Pradesh, which caused 81 deaths of people. 

2000– Microsoft had released Windows ME.

2015  – The first observation of Gravitational waves was made, announced by the LIGO and VIRGO collaborations on 11 February 2016.

1769 – Boron von Humboldt, a German scientist who explored Central and South America and published data that forms the foundation of the study of ecology, which he initiated.

1774 – Lord William Bentinck, He was a British soldier and statesman. He served as Governor-General of India from 1828 to 1835. He has been credited for significant social and educational reforms in India including abolishing Sati, suppressing female infanticide, and human sacrifice. 

1879 – Margaret Higgins Sanger, an American birth control activist, sex educator, writer, and nurse.

1887 – Charles Dana Gibson, an American artist who created the Gibson Girl, an idealist picture of a woman which set a new style of American femininity.

1923 – Ram Jethmalani, an Indian lawyer, and politician.

1968 – Tanya Arvind Dubash, Indian businesswoman. She is an executive director and chief brand officer at the Godrej Group.

1975 – Rahul Sharma, an Indian businessman, founder of Revolt Motors, YU Televentures, and the co-founder of Micromax Informatics. He married to actress Asin Thottumukal.

1984 – Ayushmann Khurrana, Indian actor and singer.

1712 – Giovanni Domenico Cassini, Italian Mathematician, astronomer, and engineer. Cassini discovered four satellites of the planet Saturn and noted the division of the rings of Saturn; the Cassini Division was named after him. Giovanni Domenico Cassini was also the first of his family to begin work on the project of creating a topographic map of France.

1836 – Aaron Burr, an American politician, and lawyer. A Founding Father, he served as the third vice president of the United States during President Thomas Jefferson’s first term 

1901 -William McKinley, an American politician. He was the 25th President of the United States, the last one to have served in the American Civil War.

1998 – Yang Shangkun, 4th president of the People’s Republic of China.

2005 – Robert Wise, American Oscan winning film director.

2011 – Harishchandra Madhavrao Birajdar, a wrestler and wrestling coach from India. He was a Gold Medallist in the 1970 British Commonwealth Games. He was also known as the coach of National Games winners.

2015 – Fred DeLuca, American businessman, co-founded Subway.
